This county needs to find out much more about its water supply before we run pell-mell into the kind of rapid development the county seems to be contemplating. At a recent Water Summit I attended in Carson City, the state water engineer reported one of his biggest current concerns is "overappropriation of groundwater basins." Here in Douglas County, we need to pay more heed to the recharge rate. Latest findings show the recharge is demonstrating a pattern of diminishing returns. We don't want to squander the good fortune granted to Douglas County through the existence of our aquifer.
